Auto Mechanic

Summary of Position

Under supervision from the Fleet and Facilities Superintendent, performs the maintenance and repair of various light and heavy-duty vehicles, equipment, and apparatus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Trouble-shoots and diagnoses vehicles and equipment for necessary maintenance and/or repairs.
    • Completes work orders; prices parts; provides estimates to customers; obtains approval from customers to conduct work. 
    • Maintains records of all repairs and work orders.
    • Research and orders parts and supplies.
    • Performs preventive maintenance services in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.
    • Services and maintains vehicles, checks brakes, front end, electrical systems, and related areas.
    • Replaces tie rods, springs, and shock absorbers; replaces alternators, regulators, starters, wiring, gauges; rebuilds or adjusts components as required.
    • Repairs and maintains mowers and power tools.
    • Repairs and maintains, equipment, and trailers.
    • Repairs and maintains emergency apparatuses such as police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances.
    • Interacts with other departments, municipalities, and vendors to schedule and coordinate repairs.
    • Ability to respond to road calls.
    • Ability to be on call for periods of time.
    • Works safely; follows safe work practices.
    • Maintains the shop area.
    • May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.

      SCOPE OF SUPERVISION
      • Works under general supervision of the Fleet and Facilities Superintendent

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or equivalent; AND two years of vehicle maintenance and repair experience, including lawn equipment and small engine repair and maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  

Must provide your own tools for your use.

Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Diesel and gasoline engines.
  • General automotive and motorized equipment maintenance and repair methods and techniques.
  • Tools, equipment, methods and materials used in automotive and motorized equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Proper tire repairs 
  • Lawn equipment and small engine repair maintenance and repair methods and techniques.
  • Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Customer service principles and practices.
  • Principles of record keeping.
 
 
Skill in:
  • Interpreting and applying City codes, laws and regulations.
  • Trouble-shooting and diagnosing problems and determining the appropriate repairs.
  • Reading and understanding manuals and specifications.
  • Maintaining accurate work records.
  • Using power and hand tools.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other City departments and vendors.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.
 
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 
Possession of a valid Texas Class B commercial driver’s license, IMAC AC certification, Level I EVT status within (1) year which includes (2) Automotive Services Excellence (A.S.E.) and (2) Emergency Vehicle Technician (E.V.T.) Certifications.  
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in automotive shop work environment.  May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.   May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.  May be required to climb ladders.
