Description

Applications will be screened and those whose backgrounds best match the requirements of the position will be invited to participate in a competitive examination process which may include any combination of the following: Multiple-choice exam and/or Oral Exam. Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director- Personnel Commission.

This position is 40 hours per week, 12 months per year position and is benefits eligible. 

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list valid for 6 months.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform skilled plumbing installations, repairs and maintenance work in school facilities; perform skilled welding work.
 

Examples of Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  • Install, repair and maintain a wide variety of plumbing fixtures and equipment such as valves and other control devices, sprinkler systems, dishwashers, kitchen ranges, ovens, various pumps, space heaters, hot water heaters, hot water heating systems, boilers, faucets and other plumbing fixtures. E
  • Caulk and pack joints; clear stoppages and repair breaks or leaks in water hydrants, service pipes and fire sprinkler systems. E
  • Operate power and hand tools, such as pipe cutters, threading machines, sewer clean-out equipment and other types of tools pertinent to the trade; drive a vehicle to conduct work. E
  • Perform skilled welding work such as acetylene welding, acetylene oxygen brazing, silver brazing and soft soldering. E
  • Build and maintain drains, sanitary sewers, storm drains, catch basins and other lines; clear stoppages as needed. E
  • Repair and maintain gas lines and mains. E
  • Perform periodic inspection surveys to check for needed alterations, replacements or repairs; initiate work orders as appropriate; prepare project specifications. E
  • Repair and test backflow devices; make emergency repairs on mains and laterals. E
  • Inspect completed contract work for adherence to plans, specifications and applicable codes. E
  • Layout, design and participate in new construction projects as assigned; E
  • Estimate labor, material and equipment requirements; monitor inventory levels of supplies and equipment; order supplies and equipment as needed. E
  • Communicate with administrators, staff and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns; collaborate with outside contractors, other departments and maintenance personnel to complete assigned projects as necessary. E
  • Work from verbal and written instructions, blueprints, sketches and work orders; respond to emergency needs as requested. E
  • Prepare and maintain various records and reports related to projects, equipment, inspections, maintenance and assigned activities. E
  • Oversee the work of others as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to:  completion of an apprenticeship or other formal training program and two years of journey-level plumbing experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
 Valid California Class C driver's license.

Use of plumbing and welding materials, tools and methods, gas heaters, boilers, pumps and appliances.
State and local laws, codes and ordinances relative to plumbing installation.
