About the Role:

The Refrigeration/Utilities Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the optimal operation and maintenance of refrigeration and utility systems within the facility. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining complex refrigeration equipment to guarantee consistent performance and energy efficiency. The technician will also oversee the upkeep of utility systems such as HVAC, boilers, and compressed air systems, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. By proactively identifying potential issues and performing preventative maintenance, the technician helps minimize downtime and supports uninterrupted facility operations. Ultimately, this role contributes to maintaining a safe, efficient, and comfortable environment for all facility stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or technical training program in refrigeration, HVAC, or a related field.
  • Proven experience working with commercial or industrial refrigeration and utility systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems relevant to refrigeration and utilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • EPA Section 608 Certification for handling refrigerants.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and building management systems (BMS).
  • Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations related to refrigeration and utilities.
  • Additional certifications in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical trades.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, food processing, or cold storage environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on refrigeration systems including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated controls.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, and control system issues related to refrigeration and utility equipment.
  • Maintain and service utility systems such as HVAC units, boilers, chillers, and air compressors to ensure reliable operation.
  • Monitor system performance and maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and parts inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies during all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to optimize system efficiency and implement upgrades or modifications as needed.
  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and provide effective solutions to minimize operational disruptions.

The Refrigeration/Utilities Technician utilizes strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills daily to diagnose and repair complex equipment issues efficiently. Proficiency in reading technical documentation and schematics enables accurate maintenance and system upgrades. Effective communication skills are essential for coordinating with team members and reporting on system status and repairs. Time management and organizational skills help prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion of maintenance schedules and emergency repairs. Additionally, knowledge of safety standards and environmental regulations is applied consistently to maintain a safe working environment and ensure compliance.
