Irrigation Technician

Duties & Responsibilities

• In-depth understanding of water management science, soil science, irrigation technology, and the parts and components of irrigation systems, including pumps, valves, controllers, piping, wiring and hydraulics
• Testing soil and vegetation samples to identify a site's irrigation needs
• Designing piping and water delivery layouts that comprise irrigation systems
• Preparing sites for irrigation system installation, such as digging trenches
• Cutting, positioning and joining pipes and assembling other irrigation system components, such as pumps and backflow preventers
• Testing and adjusting sprinkler systems to ensure a successful installation
• Troubleshooting and repairing sprinkler system issues
• Educating customers on how to operate sprinkler systems
• Staying up to date on the latest innovations in irrigation system technology
• Ability to safely and correctly use soldering and brazing tools, moisture sensors, soil tension testers, water flow meters, pipe cutters, leak detectors, hacksaws, mattocks and trencher machines
• Uses analytical and spatial reasoning skills to interpret site test results and use them to inform irrigation system designs
• All other duties as assigned

Required Skills & Abilities

• Verbal communication skills to provide instructions to those assisting with the installation process and to facilitate conversations with customers, and coordinate with grounds staff, landscapers, or other technicians
• Problem-solving and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot systems and make necessary repairs
• Ability to lift pipes, dig trenches, and carry equipment up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able to withstand long periods of time walking and/or standing
• Must have a valid driver's license
