Summary
A well-established mechanical contracting firm based in San Diego, specializing in commercial HVAC, plumbing, piping, and building systems, is seeking an experienced Sales / Preconstruction professional. The ideal candidate combines deep technical knowledge of mechanical construction with a strong background in business development, proposal management, value engineering, and closing complex commercial projects. This role is client-facing and strategic, requiring close coordination with estimating, operations, and project teams to turn opportunities into profitable work while maintaining quality, client trust, and company reputation.
Duties & Responsibilities
Lead business development initiatives by identifying, qualifying, and pursuing new commercial clients (GCs, design-build teams, owners, facility managers) while strengthening existing relationships through proactive engagement and consistent follow-up.
Oversee the full preconstruction and sales process for assigned pursuits, including document review, takeoffs, scope development, subcontractor/vendor pricing, and conceptual to detailed estimating.
Prepare compelling proposals and technical presentations that clearly define scope, highlight value engineering options, and communicate schedule and risk considerations; present to clients and negotiate terms as required.
Collaborate with estimating, engineering, project management, and field teams to ensure constructability, accurate pricing, and a seamless handoff from bid to execution. Provide market feedback and input on competitive strategy.
Maintain responsibility for proposal margins — identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies, and ensuring profitability targets are met.
Utilize CRM software (e.g., Salesforce) to track leads, manage pipelines, and report on activities, revenue forecasts, and win/loss trends.
Represent the company at industry functions, design meetings, and networking events, positioning the firm as a trusted technical resource and long-term partner.
